Why We Use Wooden Spoons with Our Honey

By: The Beekeeper's Wife

I grew up with wooden spoons in the kitchen, and it is what I always grab when I am cooking.  It turns out that there are benefits to using wooden utensils with honey.

Benefits of Wooden Spoons

Wood is a non-reactive material that will not interfere with the flavor profile of honey.  Metal spoons and plastic spoons are reactive materials that can add a slight metallic or plastic "twang" to the flavor of honey.  Wooden spoons also help to hold on to the honey when you are dipping, for a better drizzle experience. Hard woods are ideal for honey because they do not absorb moisture from the honey, and they are more durable and less likely to splinter.

Care for Wooden Spoons

It is best to hand-wash wooden spoons and dry thoroughly after each use.  It is also recommended to oil them with a natural mineral oil or beeswax oil every few months in order to extend the life of the wooden spoon.

 Shop for Wooden Spoons

We carry a variety of wooden spoons in our shop so you get the most benefits from your raw local honey!  We have a honey dipper that is the perfect tool for drizzling honey.  Because our local honey is cotton honey and tends to crystallize relatively quickly, we also offer a couple of wooden spoons, so you can scoop out the crystallized honey.  My favorite texture is when the honey is crystallizing, but still soft enough to scoop, and I scoop a spoonful to stir into my coffee.  Shop wooden honey dippers and spoons here!
