Bee Yard Tours in Lubbock County, Texas: A Hands-On Beekeeping Experience
By the Beekeeper's Daughter
We believe the best way to understand honeybees is to spend real time with them, right inside the bee yard. That’s exactly what our Bee Yard Tours offer: a small-group, hands-on beekeeping experience in the heart of West Texas.
Whether you’re curious about bees, interested in beekeeping, or just looking for a unique outdoor activity near Lubbock, this is an experience designed to bring you directly into the world of the hive.
What Is a Bee Yard Tour?
A Bee Yard Tour is an immersive visit to one of our working apiaries located near Idalou, Texas, just outside Lubbock. During the tour, guests are guided through active beehives where they can observe honeybees up close and learn how a hive truly functions.
Groups are kept intentionally small (typically 1 to 3 people) so everyone gets direct, hands-on interaction. You’ll open hives, examine frames, and see firsthand how bees organize, build comb, raise brood, and produce honey.
Most importantly, you’ll be participating alongside an experienced beekeeper, learning by doing rather than just watching.
What You’ll Do During the Tour
Every Bee Yard Tour is a little different depending on what the bees are doing that day, but you can expect:
- Opening active beehives in a working bee yard.
- Pulling and inspecting honey and brood frames.
- Learning how to identify queen activity, worker bees, and drone bees.
- Understanding how bees communicate and organize their colony.
- Hands-on mentorship in basic beekeeping techniques.
- Plenty of time for questions and discussion.
Duration and Group Size
Bee Yard Tours typically last a minimum of 1 hour, but often run anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the group’s interest level and the day’s hive activity.
We don’t rush the experience. If the bees are active and the group is engaged, we take our time.
- Group size: 1–3 people included.
- Additional guests are allowed, but at additional cost.
Pricing
- $300 flat rate for 1–3 people.
- $75 for each additional guest over 3.
All protective gear is included with your tour.
Location: Idalou Bee Yard
Tours are held at our working apiary near Idalou, Texas, just a short drive from Lubbock. This location was chosen specifically because it provides an ideal environment for both bees and visitors.
Exact meeting instructions are provided after booking.
What to Wear and Bring
We provide all essential protective equipment, including bee suits and veils. However, we do recommend a few things to make your visit more comfortable:
- Baseball cap: Helps keep your veil properly positioned away from your face.
- Boots or sturdy footwear: The bee yard is in a rural area, so closed-toe, durable shoes are strongly recommended.
- Comfortable outdoor clothing: Dress for the weather and expect to be outside for the full experience.
Is It Safe?
Yes. Safety is a top priority during every Bee Yard Tour. All guests are fully suited up, and we take precautions to ensure a controlled and calm environment around the hives.
Honeybees are naturally focused on their colony work, and with proper guidance and equipment, guests are able to safely observe and participate in hive inspections.

Why People Love This Experience
Most people have never been this close to a working beehive. Seeing thousands of bees working together, holding a frame covered in honeycomb, and understanding how everything fits together creates a lasting impression.
It’s educational, hands-on, and completely different from anything you’ll find in a classroom or online video.
Whether you’re interested in bees, agriculture, sustainability, or just want to try something new in West Texas, this experience is designed to stay with you long after the tour ends.
